§ The lay of the land

A real disc golf town, if you beat the heat

Austin punches well above its weight for disc golf. The city's parks department has quietly built one of the densest course networks in Texas, and the local clubs keep them in shape year-round. You'll find everything here: wide-open municipal layouts perfect for a first round, tight cedar corridors that'll humble a 950-rated player, and a handful of pay-to-play gems on the outskirts worth the drive.

The one catch is summer. From June through September, midday rounds in the Texas sun are no joke — locals play at dawn or after 6pm, carry more water than they think they need, and save the exposed courses for the shoulder seasons. October through May is glorious, which is exactly when the tournament calendar fills up.

New to the area? Start with Zilker or Bartholomew for the gentle introduction, then graduate to the wooded challenge at Mary Moore Searight once your forehand is dialed.

Austin disc golf, answered

How many disc golf courses are in Austin?
There are 47 courses across the greater Austin metro, including Round Rock, Cedar Park, and Pflugerville. 31 are free public courses, and 22 have 18 or more holes. New layouts are added every season.
Are Austin's disc golf courses free?
Most are. The city's park courses — Zilker, Bartholomew, Roy G. Guerrero, and others — are free to play, dawn to dusk. A handful of premium pay-to-play courses on the outskirts charge $5–$10 and offer better-maintained fairways and tournament-grade baskets.
What's the best course for beginners in Austin?
Start at Zilker Park or Bartholomew Park — both are open, walkable, and forgiving, with short tees and friendly regulars. Once you're comfortable, Mary Moore Searight is the natural next step up in difficulty.
When is the best time of year to play in Austin?
October through May. Texas summers are brutal — if you must play June–September, go at dawn or after 6pm, stick to shaded wooded courses, and bring far more water than feels necessary.
Can I play disc golf at night in Austin?
Three area courses have lights for night play, and glow rounds are popular in summer to beat the heat. Check each course page for lighting and hours before you head out.
